Frequently Asked Questions

How is my typing speed (WPM) calculated?

WPM is calculated by taking the number of characters typed, dividing by 5 (standard word length), and then dividing by the time in minutes. Errors are usually subtracted in 'Net WPM'.

What is a good typing speed?

The average person types around 40 WPM. Professional typists or gamers often hit 70-100 WPM, while world-record speeds can exceed 200 WPM.

Does accuracy matter more than speed?

Yes. In real-world work, 90% accuracy is the minimum. It is faster to type slightly slower without errors than to type fast and spend time fixing mistakes.

How can I improve my typing speed?

Practice 'Touch Typing'—using all ten fingers without looking at the keyboard. Focus on accuracy first; speed will naturally follow with muscle memory.

Are the tests available in different time durations?

Yes. You can choose from 1-minute, 3-minute, or 5-minute tests to build both burst speed and long-term endurance.

Can I use this test on my phone?

Yes, but WPM on a touchscreen is typically 50% slower than on a physical keyboard. It's a great way to measure your mobile chatting speed.

Why does my WPM fluctuate between tests?

Different texts have varying difficulty levels (short common words vs long technical terms). Our 'Monkeytype' mode uses random words for consistent measurement.

Is the typing data recorded?

No. Your results are displayed only to you for the current session. We don't store your typing history or keystrokes.

Can I take a typing test for a job application?

Yes. Many Clerk and Data Entry jobs require a certification of 35-40 WPM. Practicing here is excellent preparation for official exams.

Does the tool support specialized layouts like Dvorak or Colemak?

The tool detects whatever layout your operating system is using. If you switch to Dvorak in Windows/Mac settings, the test will work perfectly.
